Neuroidal Networks Project Page
This page gives information about research related to the neuroidal
framework proposed by Valiant in Circuits of the Mind, 1994.
The author of this page, Cengiz Gunay, has
worked on this project during his Ph.D. in
Computer Science under the supervision of Dr. Anthony
S. Maida in the Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS) at the University of
Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL). He is
currently pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Biology
at Emory University under the supervision of
Dieter
Jaeger, at the Jaeger Lab.
A simulation program has been under development for research purposes. The
Java programming language has been used for implementation, the
reason being the widespread availability and its platform independence.

Projects using the Neuroidal Networks
- Phase Segregation: This work deals with tolerating delays and using phase segregation for maintaining coherence in representation by synchrony. It suggests methods for maintaining coherent bindings in topologies with converging direct-indirect pathways.
We have presented this paper (and presentation) at the IJCNN '01. This theoretical model is to be verified by using the Neuroidal Network simulator. This abstract explains the role of this work in the project.
- A report on the initial implementation of the Neuroidal Network simulator allowing distributed computations on several workstations for the Operating Systems class CMPS 555. Another report on same project on its cognitive contributions.
- A report on the project aimed at pruning unused connections for possible VLSI implementations of the Neuroidal Network for the Computer Architecture course CMPS 530.
