About these designs
Two months ago, between semesters, I decided to refresh my Postscript skills.
I drew the Mariner's compass (the green thing) by staring at a design
on a gift box in a catalog.
I "freehanded" the blue design in Postscript. A few weeks afterwards,
I came across an article on quilts in the Lafayette (La.)
Daily Advertiser. It
described the blue thing as a "Louisiana star."
I used this design for everything from a
Christmas gift calendar
(my
original motive for doing the design) to a
seminar announcement.
When I learned that we don't have an EE-IR Center
logo, I obviously thought of adapting it for a logo.
Through this work, I learned several things:
- The Postscript-to-PNM-to-GIF format conversion is not perfect.
In my designs above, the logos were shrunk in the Postscript-to-PNM process.
-
JPEG is clearly not a good format for graphics, especially those
with text.
- Viewing GIF is an adventure; a lot depends on your graphic system's
lookup table.
