Dr. Raghavan's primary area of expertise is information retrieval (IR). In this field, his research activities address various approaches to designing effective retrieval systems. In particular, his current goals are to develop strategies through which an IR system can improve its performance through prior interactions with its users. The techniques involve various kinds of machine learning paradigms and the application domain includes traditional business databases as well as text and image databases. He has also investigated various aspects of evaluating information retrieval system performance. More recently, Dr. Raghavan has been involved in designing efficient algorithms for data analysis tasks, such as predictive modelling, database segmentation and link analysis, in the context of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD). Raghavan co-guest edited the September 1995 issue of the IEEE Computer magazine on "Content-Based Picture Retrieval Systems." A special issue of the J. of American Society for Information Science on "Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining," guest edited by Raghavan et al., was published in April 1998. His research activities are supported by DoE, NSF, USGS and the Louisiana Board of Regents.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Raghavan co-chaired the NSF Workshop on Future Directions in Information Retrieval in 1991, which subsequently led to the sponsorship of the digital library initiative by the NSF, DARPA and NASA. He has served in numerous conference committees and is currently an ACM National Lecturer. Raghavan directs the DoD component of Louisiana's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitiveness in Research (DEPSCoR) program. He is a member of the ACM, the IEEE, the Phi Kappa Phi and the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Computer Science honor societies. Dr. Raghavan received the UL Lafayette Foundation's Distinguished Professor Award in 2001.
