This dissertation explores the domain of the philosophy of cognitive science. After first discussing the relationship between philosophy and cognitive science, I then make a distinction between problems of the philosophy of mind and those of the philosophy of cognitive science. These two types of problems are largely different, though neither focus is superior to the other. These differences stem from the inherently empirical nature of cognitive science and the necessity of evaluating philosophical problems within the discipline in accordance with that focus. I then discuss some foundational problems in cognitive science, developing an approach to addressing these problems based on a recognition both of the peculiarities of the subject matter of cognitive science as well as of the discipline's empirical nature.
